Try using baking soda. Clear the carpet of furniture or toys, and lightly sprinkle some baking soda over the carpeting. Let it set for 15 minutes, and then vacuum up the area. The baking soda pulls out the oils that hold odors, removing the smells pets and old socks have left behind.
